For many of us, starting a new job can stir feelings of anxiety, but, the sooner you can face those fears, the sooner you start making an impact. Here are five ways to feel more confident at your new job.
1. Give yourself a Break
Your body is a mirror for how your mind is, so relax. Loosen your shoulders. Breathe naturally. You are not supposed to know everything or everyone, you are actually there to learn.
The better you calmly focus and the more you keep positive, the better it’s going to be for you while you settle in.
2. Remember that the unfamiliar will soon be familiar
How it all seems right now is not how it’s going to seem in a week, a month, or a year. Remind yourself that what seems new now will all seem natural and ‘second nature’ very soon.
3. Ask questions
Never be afraid to ask questions when you don’t know something. Doing a task incorrectly because you don’t fully understand it is not a good way to boost confidence. If you’re ever unsure of how something should be done, ask someone else what you need to do.
4. See Them as People, Too
Part of the fear of a new job is thinking that everyone around you is better in some way; that they know more or do more or are capable of more.
Everyone has their own strengths, weaknesses, wins, losses, history, and potential. And comparing yourself to those people and automatically making them better is just a strategy to keep you small and afraid.
5. Have Fun
In any new role, there’s pressure to perform right from the start, whether that means finding the best solutions, providing the right answers, or impressing the right people.
But there is nothing worse for your self-esteem than taking yourself too seriously. Of course you want to do a good job, but you can also have fun while you’re doing it. Learn to laugh at your setbacks and mistakes, and take criticism with good humour – you’ll be amazed how being more light-hearted boosts your confidence and helps you improve yourself.
